Gilles DA COSTA
Extensive experience in microfinance advisory and capacity-building and recently with banks.
Gilles DA COSTA has worked throughout Western and Central Africa over the last 15 years advising MFIs and banks on strategic development and operational planning, training, social performance management & assessment.
Gilles holds a Master’s degree in Management of Economic Policy, (a Joint-Program of Felix Houphouet Boigny University in Abidjan, in partnership with the World Bank Institute and the African Capacity Building Foundation), as well as a Master’s in Management and Technical Banking.
As Regional Manager, he made several audit and social rating of MFIs for Inclusion [Africa], a social rating agency, a subsidiary of Inclusion [Socialratings]. In this position, he developed a Responsible Finance Audit Tool for Commercial Banks in RD Congo as an international expert on one project sponsored by the Promotion Fund for Financial Inclusion (FPM), a fund set up by donors Fund (KFW, UNCDF, GIZ ….)
He has evaluated commercial banks on the implementation of Responsible Finance Standards included environmental issues. These activities require many global analysis of financial sector in each country visited. Gilles previously held the position of Chief of Operations & Programs, as well as Coordinator of Social Performance Management and Financial Education at the Benin Professional Microfinance Network (Consortium Alafia), where he coordinated the establishment of an MFI rating mechanism as part of the “Competition for Exellence” among microfinance institutions in Benin. In this position, he also coordinated many researches and works groups on financial issues in Benin, West Africa and make some publications in the “Magazine de la Microfinance” of Consortium Alafia. He participle to the news letter of Inclusion [SocialRating] Sl. Gilles also make some researches in financial sector for Catholic Relief Service (CRS). In addition, he is a Certified Lead Assessor on Client Protection Principles (SMART Campaign) and SPI4 certified for Social Audit. As well, Gilles is a resource person for the SPTF (Social Performance Task Force).
